Supporting WCWRC in “catching the folks slipping through the cracks”
The catharsis of a late-night heart-to-heart with someone who understands; the pride of baking your baby’s first birthday cake in a kitchen of your own; the relief of finally exhaling in a safe space – the value of West Central Women’s Resource Centre’s (WCWRC’s) transitional housing initiative is made up of a million little moments just like these.
Located in the heart of Winnipeg, this facility serves women and gender-diverse individuals who are “exiting situations of gender-based violence,” says WCWRC Executive Director Lorie English. “For us, this housing represented an opportunity to catch the folks that were slipping through the cracks of the current system.”
As part of our 20th anniversary series of charitable donations, Payworks was honoured to provide $100,000 to the transitional housing initiative, followed by an additional donation of $150,000 over three years (starting in 2022). We were grateful for the opportunity to visit the space last summer and to find out how it was already making a positive impact in the community.
In the short video below, hear why Payworks has been proud to serve as a long-time supporter of WCWRC, and virtually explore this warm and inclusive space for yourself!
Since 1999, WCWRC has worked tirelessly to “empower women, gender diverse people and their community to move from where they are to where they want to be.” They a vast array of support and services that directly reflect the evolving and significant needs of their neighbourhood. From the early mornings into the evenings, WCWRC provides drop-in and food services, housing and income resources, training and skill building, and services in childminding and for newcomer women. They also offer Restoring the Balance, a “trauma-informed program founded on traditional Indigenous values, teachings and ways of healing to provide holistic support.”
