Habitat for Humanity: hammers, hard hats and heart
When new folks join the Payworks team, they’re delighted to learn they’re entitled to two paid days off per year to volunteer at a charitable organization of their choice (thanks to our Pay it Forward (PIF) program!). But then the question quickly becomes: with so many deserving initiatives out there, how do you choose where to spend those days?
Since the PIF program’s inception over 10 years ago, staff have returned time and time again to Habitat for Humanity: “a movement of people in Canada and around the world, working side by side to make homeownership accessible for more families.”
This past year was no exception; in the last weeks of summer alone, three different rounds of proud PIF-ers arrived at a Habitat for Humanity Manitoba job site, eager to make an impact and support safe, affordable housing for their neighbours.
Joist installation in August

In mid-August, a few members of our talented Quality Assurance crew put their eyes for detail to great use as they spent the day installing I-joists at a home under construction (but not before what they describe as “a thorough safety and procedures briefing to ensure everyone was ready for the work ahead,” of course!).
“The site was buzzing with volunteers, and we had the chance to connect with and work alongside many energetic and inspiring individuals,” they shared. “Seeing the progress we’d made by the end of the day was incredibly fulfilling. It was a powerful reminder of how much impact we can have when we come together as a community.”
Just over a week later, Product Support Analyst Michael McDonald arrived to help install the joist for the basement floor – and made some new friends in the process!
“The group that I was with was all from a different company, but we all felt like we were part of the same team. I really enjoyed my day!” he said.

Siding and insulation in September
By mid-September, more Payworks staff were on the scene; this time, it was two leaders from our Product group. They were tasked with putting up siding and insulation to promote the energy efficiency of the units being built.
“For me, the highlight of the day was teaming up and getting to know each other better on a project outside of our regular work,” said Product Manager Steve Bestvater. “I think those conversations and experiences help to even further strengthen the working relationships you have when you’re back at the office!”
