**Key Takeaways**

Canada's approach to daylight saving time has shifted significantly in 2026. British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, and the Northwest Territories have all made the switch to permanent daylight time, meaning their clocks will not fall back on November 1, 2026. Saskatchewan and Yukon were already on permanent time. That leaves the rest of Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces, and Nunavut still observing the traditional clock change. This guide breaks down exactly where every province and territory stands.

4\. [FAQs](https://blog.payworks.ca/times-up-on-the-clock-change-your-province-by-province-dst-guide-for-2026#FAQs)

Every spring and fall, a good chunk of Canada dutifully changes the clocks. And every year, someone forgets. Whether you're scheduling shifts, managing time-sensitive payroll runs, or just trying to make your Monday morning meeting on time, the clock change isn't just an inconvenience. It's a logistical puzzle.

And in 2026, that puzzle got a whole lot more interesting.

This fall, for the first time, a growing portion of the country will not be rolling back their clocks on November 1. If you manage employees across multiple provinces, it's worth knowing exactly who's in which camp.

## Why Does Canada Have Different Time Change Rules in Each Province?

Time zones and daylight saving time in Canada are governed by provincial and territorial legislation, not a single national rule. That means each jurisdiction can (and does) make its own call.

According to the National Research Council of Canada, provinces and territories that observe daylight saving time spring forward on the second Sunday in March at 2:00 a.m. and fall back on the first Sunday in November. But with several major provinces now opting out permanently, the map looks very different heading into the winter of 2026.

## Which Provinces Have Gone Permanent and Which Still Change Their Clocks?

Here's the full province-by-province breakdown as of fall 2026:

| **Province / Territory** | **Clock Change Nov 1?** | **Status** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Newfoundland & Labrador | Yes | Still observes DST. Clocks fall back at 02:00 NST on November 1. |
| Nova Scotia | Yes | Still observes DST. Clocks fall back at 02:00 AST on November 1. |
| Prince Edward Island | Yes | Still observes DST. Clocks fall back at 02:00 AST on November 1. |
| New Brunswick | Yes | Still observes DST. Clocks fall back at 02:00 AST on November 1. |
| Quebec | Yes | Still observes DST. Clocks fall back at 02:00 EST on November 1. (Some areas east of 63 degrees West longitude use Atlantic Time year-round.) |
| Ontario | Yes (for now) | Still observes DST in most of the province. Passed legislation in 2020 to make daylight time permanent, but implementation depends on Quebec and New York State doing the same. [Northwestern Ontario will align with Manitoba in permanent Central Daylight Time, effective November 1.](https://news.ontario.ca/en/release/1008130/ontario-moving-to-permanent-daylight-saving-time-in-parts-of-northwestern-ontario) |
| Manitoba | No -- PERMANENT | Premier Wab Kinew signed the proclamation on September 25, 2026. Manitoba will remain on Central Daylight Time year-round (UTC-5). Clocks will not fall back on November 1. |
| Saskatchewan | No -- PERMANENT | Has used Central Standard Time year-round since 1966. No clock changes. Lloydminster used to follow Alberta's time rules, but the two provinces now share a time zone (UTC-6). |
| Alberta | No -- PERMANENT | The Official Time Act received Royal Assent on May 14, 2026, and took effect June 18, 2026. Alberta remains on Mountain Daylight Time (UTC-6) year-round, or Alberta Time (ABT). Clocks will not fall back on November 1. |
| British Columbia | No -- PERMANENT | B.C. made its final clock change on March 8, 2026, and moved to permanent Pacific Daylight Time (UTC-7), or Pacific time (PCT). Clocks will not fall back on November 1. (Some eastern/northeastern exceptions may apply.) |
| Northwest Territories | No -- PERMANENT | Following Alberta's lead, the NWT also committed to ending seasonal time changes and will not fall back on November 1. The NWT’s new permanent time standard is known as Northwest Territories Time (UTC-6). |
| Nunavut | Yes (mostly) | Covers 3 time zones; all change at 02:00 local time on November 1. Exception: Southampton Island stays on Eastern Standard Time year-round. |
| Yukon | No -- PERMANENT | On permanent Yukon Standard Time (UTC-7) since 2020. No clock changes. |

## What Does This Mean for Your Business and Payroll?

If you have employees in multiple provinces, you'll want to pay attention this November 1. The growing number of regions that are no longer changing their clocks means the time difference between some Canadian cities is shifting and that has real implications for your scheduling and payroll.

Here's what to keep on your radar:

- **Shift scheduling:** Employees in Ontario or Quebec who work a night shift on November 1 will effectively work an extra hour when clocks fall back. Meanwhile, colleagues in Alberta or B.C. working the same shift won't see any change. Make sure your scheduling system accounts for the difference.
- **Cross-provincial time gaps are changing:** Historically, Alberta and Ontario shared the same two-hour gap year-round. Starting November 2, 2026, that gap will be one hour in the winter (when Ontario falls back and Alberta doesn't). Likewise, the difference between British Columbia and Ontario will also narrow to a two hour gap in the winter, instead of three year round. Plan your cross-team meetings and deadlines accordingly.
- **Payroll processing windows:** If you submit payroll or run batch processes at specific times, check whether your processing windows are affected by the new time gaps between provinces.

**Payworks Pro Tip:** If you're a Payworks client, our scheduling and time and attendance tools are designed to take the hassle out of exactly these kinds of complexities. We’re available by chat, phone, or email to answer any of your questions related to the changes.

## FAQs

**Which provinces are no longer changing their clocks in Canada?**

As of November 2026, seven regions will have moved to permanent time and will not be changing clocks: British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan (since 1966), and Yukon (since 2020).

**When do clocks change in Canada on November 1, 2026?**

For provinces that still observe daylight saving time, including Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nunavut, clocks fall back one hour at 2:00 a.m. on November 1, 2026.

**What should employers do to prepare?**

Review shift schedules for any employees in provinces that still change their clocks on November 1. Confirm payroll processing windows if you operate across provincial lines. Update any time-based automations or scheduling tools. And if you're managing teams across B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, or the NWT alongside Ontario or Quebec, note that your winter time gap between those regions will be one hour narrower than it used to be.

## What's Next?

The clock change conversation in Canada is far from over: Ontario and Quebec are both watching neighbouring jurisdictions closely.
